I know, I know — “ethics” sounds like a lecture. But this is actually the most practical thing we’ll cover this week, because these are the mistakes that get companies in the news for the wrong reasons. Let’s keep it concrete.
Bias is real, and it’s in the training data. AI models learn patterns from the internet — and the internet has biases. Ask an AI to write a job description and it might skew masculine. Ask it to evaluate resumes and it might favor certain backgrounds. This isn’t malice — it’s math reflecting society’s patterns. Your job: review AI outputs for bias before they reach customers, candidates, or decisions that affect people.
Privacy is a two-way street. When you paste text into an AI tool, that text goes to a server. Most enterprise plans don’t use your data for training, but free tiers might. Know your tool’s data policy. Rule of thumb: don’t paste anything into a free AI tool that you wouldn’t put in an email to a stranger. For sensitive data, use enterprise-grade tools with clear data handling guarantees.
Transparency builds trust. If your customers interact with AI, tell them. If a report was drafted by AI, disclose it. If an AI made a recommendation, say so. People are remarkably okay with AI when they know it’s AI. They’re remarkably not okay when they find out they were deceived.
Accountability can’t be automated. When AI gets something wrong — and it will — a human needs to own the outcome. “The AI did it” is not an acceptable answer to your customer, your regulator, or your board. Decide now: who reviews AI outputs? Who’s accountable when something slips through?
