How LLMs Work in 3 Minutes

LLMs predict the next word — like phone autocomplete trained on the entire internet. Once you understand this, you use AI completely differently.

Hey team 👋 Day 2

Okay so THIS is the part that blew my mind when I first understood it — and it’s way simpler than you’d think. You know how your phone predicts the next word when you’re texting? You type “looking forward to” and it suggests “hearing from you”? An LLM is that exact same idea, but trained on basically the entire internet and cranked up to an absurd degree.

That’s literally the whole trick. When ChatGPT or Claude writes you a paragraph, it’s predicting the most likely next word, then the next, then the next — billions of times, using patterns it learned from reading more text than any human could in a thousand lifetimes. It doesn’t store facts like a database. It stores patterns of how language works. That’s why it can write you a poem, draft a strategy memo, AND confidently make stuff up — because all of those are just “plausible next words” from its perspective.

Here’s why this matters for you: once you understand that AI is predicting patterns (not “knowing things”), you use it completely differently. You stop expecting it to be a search engine. You start treating it like a brilliant writing partner that needs you to steer it. And that’s when it gets really powerful.
